Chapter 01

No heat on a February night

Winter nights in Richland and the rest of the Tri-Cities drop well below freezing, and a furnace or heat pump that quits after dark does not wait for morning to become a real problem. The house loses heat faster than most people expect, especially with a wind coming off the river.

The first risk is plumbing. Once a house stays cold long enough, water lines in outside walls, crawl spaces and garages can freeze, and a frozen pipe can split. The second risk is people. Cold is hard on infants, older adults and anyone with a health condition, and a space heater plugged into an extension cord is not a safe way to get through the night.

That is why the line is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at (509) 579-9979. When heat fails, you should reach a person, not a voicemail box that opens at eight.

Safe checks before you call

A few quick checks can sometimes bring the heat back, and they cost nothing. Make sure the thermostat is set to heat, set above the room temperature, and has working batteries if it uses them. Then look at the breaker panel: the furnace or air handler may have its own breaker, and it is fine to switch one back on once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.

Check the filter too. A badly clogged filter can make a furnace shut itself down on a safety limit. If you smell gas, or the carbon monoxide alarm goes off, do not troubleshoot. Get everyone outside, then call the gas utility or 911 before you call us. Heating is the one trade where a quick fix and a safe fix are not always the same thing.

Do not open the furnace panels or reset anything you are not sure about. If the checks come up empty, call (509) 579-9979 and tell the person what the system is doing: no heat at all, cold air, a noise, a smell, or a thermostat that will not respond.

How 24/7 dispatch actually goes

We do not promise a response time, because a promise like that is only as good as the night you need it. What we can point to is what customers have written. Doug Y. said: “Trevor got here within 2 hours on a Friday night and got us up and running within 30 minutes and even did some upkeep work to keep us running through the winter.” He also added that he had called someone else first, and they were not helpful at all.

Sage Pryhorocki wrote: “The owner of the company trevor responded to a late friday call within 30 minutes. He figured out our problem very quickly.” Both stories come from the people who run the company answering the phone and showing up, which is what a small, locally owned shop looks like.

On arrival, the findings are explained in plain language along with what it will take to fix, and the estimate is reviewed with you before work begins. Pricing is flat-rate and transparent. For furnace faults see furnace repair, and for heat pumps that will not keep up in a cold snap, see heat pumps.
